CORSICA — Following a contested first quarter, No. 4-seed Corsica-Stickney erupted for 28 unanswered points, taking down No. 13-seeded Herreid/Selby Area 38-6 in the first round of the Class 9B playoffs.
The Jaguars’ running game accounted for four of the five touchdowns in the game, totaling 317 yards on the ground. Waylon Bolle had 19 carries for 173 yards and two touchdowns, and Caden Baumuller ran 18 times for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Tate Tolsma finished with eight tackles and Sawyer Schmidt had three tackles.
ADVERTISEMENT Herreid/Selby Area had 106 rushing yards from Porter Gregg on 10 carries, scoring the lone touchdown in the first quarter. Tyson Schumacher finished with eight tackles to lead the Wolverines defense, as they finish the season at 3-6. Corsica-Stickney (7-2) will host Sully Buttes in the Class 9B quarterfinals on Oct.
31. HOWARD — Howard rushed for 347 yards and four rushing touchdowns in a home first-round win over Timber Lake in the Class 9A football playoffs. The game was ended in the third quarter by the 50-point rule.
Howard’s Tate Miller had six carries for 127 yards, Kolt Becker had seven carries for 115 yards and two touchdowns and Weston Remmers scored twice after six carries for 63 yards. Luke Koepsell had a touchdown reception and 38 yards receiving, with Carson Hinker completing 7-of-8 passes for 79 yards and a score. Remmers added a 15-yard interception return touchdown and Koepsell finished with a pair of sacks.
The visiting Panthers had 192 yards passing on 9-for-18 attempts from Cole Ducheneaux, hitting Gavin Farlee three times for 146 yards and a score. Howard (9-0) will host Ipswich in the Class 9A quarterfinals on Oct. 31.
Timber Lake’s season ends at 4-6. ADVERTISEMENT AVON — Class 9B top-seeded Avon racked up 355 rushing yards and held its visitors Jones County to only 23 total yards in a first-round playoff win on Thursday night. The game was ended at halftime via the 50-point rule.
Aziah Meyer rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries for the Pirates, while Trent Soukup had 93 yards on four carries and Jaydon Driesen had 36 rushing yards and two rushing scores. Al’Shamon Gunter had a 13-yard touchdown reception from Easton Sees, an eight-yard touchdown catch from Weston Bierema and a 38-yard interception return touchdown in the win. Landon Mudder and Kahle Hill added touchdown runs for the Pirates, as well.
The Coyotes scored in the first minute of the game with a 77-yard kickoff return touchdown from Adrik Schoon. Avon (9-0) will host a Class 9B quarterfinal on Thursday, Oct. 31.
Jones County’s season ends at 2-7. PARKSTON — It was a balanced rushing effort for Parkston in its dominant Class 9AA first-round victory over Stanley County. The Trojans finished the night with a team total of 342 rushing yards and scored all seven of their touchdowns on the ground with no one player running for more than two.
However, the Trojans didn’t get out to a very fast start. They scored the first two touchdowns of the game in the first quarter, but the Buffaloes were right there in the beginning with a first-quarter touchdown of their own to make it 14-6 after 12 minutes played. ADVERTISEMENT But from then on, Parkston dominated.
The Trojans scored five touchdowns in the second quarter and were moving the ball downfield at will. By the time the first half reached its end, the Trojans were already in full control with a 52-6 lead. Parkston added one more score before the end of the game with a touchdown in the third quarter, but that was the only second-half score.
Kaden Holzbauer led Parkston with 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Mason Jervik added 85 yards and two touchdowns while Kolter Kramer scored two touchdowns as well. Parkston (8-0) will face off with Leola/Frederick next Thursday, Oct.
31 in the second round while Stanley County ends its season with a record of 2-7. FREEMAN — Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy had little issue taking down De Smet in a Class 9AA first-round victory on Thursday. Phoenix quarterback Riley Tschetter was the offensive standout.
He finished the day with 129 yards and three touchdowns on 12-for-21 passing. He also added a team-high yards on the ground with a touchdown as well. The Phoenix jumped all over the Bulldogs from the get-go.
They scored 24 first-quarter points to get out to a huge lead before the first half was even halfway through. De Smet scored one of its two touchdowns in the second quarter, but FMFA scored two touchdowns before the end of the half to make it 32-6 at the break. ADVERTISEMENT The Phoenix added two more touchdowns before two minutes elapsed in the third quarter to go up 46-6.
The Bulldogs responded with their second and final touchdown of the day before the third quarter ended to make it 46-14. FMFA would add two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to close out the dominant first-round victory. FMFA (7-2) will meet Hill City in the second round next Thursday, Oct.
31 while De Smet finishes its season with a 4-5 record. CANISTOTA — Canistota made easy work of Oldham-Ramona-Rutland in its first-round matchup behind a 28-point second quarter to win 44-8. It was a relatively quiet first quarter with the Hawks taking an 8-0 lead off short Brady Scott rushing touchdown.
However, the second quarter was when Canistota completely took over the contest. Four touchdowns were scored and three of them came on plays of 27 yards or longer. Levi Schroeder was responsible for two of the four scores with a 36-yard receiving touchdown and a 43-yard rushing touchdown as it was 36-0 at halftime.
The Hawks added one more touchdown in the third quarter while the Raiders scored their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter. ADVERTISEMENT Overall, Canistota outgained ORR 357-125 yards in the lopsided contest. Canistota (6-3) will travel to face 9B No.
1 seed Avon next Thursday, Oct. 31, while ORR ended its season with a record of 5-4. WINNER — Class 11B No.
2-seeded Winner picked up its second win of the season over Hot Springs, ending the season of the 2023 state champions at Warrior Field. The Warriors rushed for 342 yards on 50 carries to the tune of 17 first downs and four scores on the ground. Karson Keiser did the majority of the scoring damage, rushing for 10 carries, 163 yards and three touchdowns, and also caught a 24-yard touchdown pass.
Gus Bartels also added a scoring run and Zac Olson had 42 yards on five carries for the Warriors. Hot Springs rushed for 175 yards as a team. Clancy Koupal had nine carries for 112 yards and two touchdowns and Connor Kramer had 58 yards on six carries.
Winner (9-0) will host Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central in a quarterfinal contest on Oct. 31. Hot Springs ends the season at 4-5.
ABERDEEN — Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central earned a road victory in the final minute on Thursday night in the first round of the Class 11B playoffs over Aberdeen Roncalli at Northern State’s Dacotah Bank Stadium. ADVERTISEMENT Tied at 7 going to the fourth quarter, Holden Havlik found Wesley Molnar for the go-ahead 28-yard touchdown pass with 8:27 remaining, giving the Blackhawks a 14-7 lead. But Sam Poncelow’s PAT kick proved to be the difference for WWSSC.
Brody Weinmeister scored for the Cavaliers with 34 seconds left from 2 yards out but the tying extra point was missed and WWSSC escaped with the victory. Ryder Michalek caught a second-quarter touchdown pass from 15 yards out from Havlik to give the Hawks a 7-0 halftime edge. Havlik finished 15-for-21 passing for 131 yards, finding Molnar four times for 54 yards and Michalek five times for 31 yards.
Payton Uecker was the Blackhawks’ leading rusher with 39 yards on 7 carries. Aiden Fisher had 68 yards on 16 carries for Aberdeen Roncalli, while also throwing for 150 yards but the Blackhawks forced three Fisher interceptions. WWSSC (7-2) will go to No.
2-seeded Winner for the quarterfinals on Oct. 31. Roncalli’s season ends at 6-3.
FREDERICK — Leola/Frederick Area needed overtime to take down Kimball/White Lake in a 22-14 first-round matchup in Frederick. The Wildkats took a 14-6 lead into the fourth quarter and seemed primed to pull the upset. However, a long fourth-quarter touchdown run tied it up at 14 a piece while neither team could find a winning score in regulation.
The two teams went to overtime, with the Titans scoring the game-winning touchdown in overtime to take the victory. For KWL, Iden Myers led the team with 166 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Johnny Lenz added 31 rushing yards as well.
Defensively, Carter Konechne had six tackles and two interceptions with one of those returned for a touchdown. Leola/Frederick Area (7-2) moves on to face Parkston in the second round next Thursday, Oct. 24 while KWL ends its season with a 6-3 mark.
CLARK — Clark/Willow Lake outlasted Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan in a 27-13 Class 11B first-round victory on Thursday night. Emmerson Larson and Griffin Musser were responsible for all four Cyclone touchdowns with three of those scores coming in the first half. The Cyclones struck first in the first quarter with a 30-yard touchdown run from Larson to take a 6-0 lead.
But the Seahawks struck back a few minutes later with a QB sneak score from Holden Wollmann to tie things up at six a piece. However, the Cyclones scored 14 unanswered points off a 20-yard touchdown run from Larson and a six-yard touchdown run from Musser to make it 20-6. But the Seahawks found the endzone before halftime off a leaping catch over multiple defenders by Macklen Weber to close the gap to 20-13.
Both teams struggled to get the offense rolling in the second half, but the Cyclones would score the lone touchdown of the second half off a 26-yard touchdown run from Musser to make it the eventual 27-13 final score. Clark/Willow Lake (7-2) will move on to face Elk Point-Jefferson in the second round while Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan finishes its campaign with a 5-4 record..
