It was a return to the lineup for Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané, a new combination in attack after both came off the bench in the Champions League mid-week win over SL Benfica. A return too for Leon Goretzka, the veteran midfielder who has fallen far down the pecking order in Bavaria but has finally found his way into a Vincent Kompany XI. The result: a second 1-0 victory in a row, a second game with overwhelming domination in possession, and a second game without conceding a single shot on target.
This time Bayern had several really golden chances to punch in a second goal — Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane all producing moments of real craft in a a span of just a few minutes — and St Pauli may count itself lucky the floodgates never opened. Now it’s time for another international break. And the games get hot and heavy after that, with Augsburg, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund awaiting in a one-week span on the other side of it.
