Plans to redevelop part of city centre due to 'safety concerns'

A council is looking to upgrade a city centre because of safety concerns. West Sussex County Council is asking for views on its plans to resurface North Street and East Street in Chichester, as well as planting trees and upgrading seating and bins. It said the current surfacing is causing “safety concerns and costly repairs” and that it has reached the end of its lifespan.

This is an essential step in ensuring Chichester thrives economically while remaining a place of historical significance. “The need for these improvements is recognised as a key priority in the Chichester Vision and Chichester Growth Programme, which focuses on making the city a vibrant, safe, and accessible place for all.” North Street in Chihcester (Image: Google) Councillor Joy Dennis, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The current surfaces in North and East Streets have reached the end of their useful life, leading to costly repairs and safety concerns.

“These proposed improvements are not only about making the city centre more attractive but also about reducing long-term maintenance costs and ensuring the safety of everyone who visits, lives or works in Chichester. Views can be shared via an online survey or at in-person events on: November 13 and 27 from 9am outside the Chichester City Council offices, North Street. November 6 and 20 at the council’s market stall in the traders’ market. November 15 at the council’s market stall in Chichester Farmers market.

The scheme will be delivered by West Sussex County Council in partnership with Chichester District Council and Chichester City Council..
