A plane passenger who stood firm against swapping seats with a tantrum-throwing child has been hailed as a hero online. The traveller took to Reddit to recount the ordeal, revealing how they were labelled heartless by the mother for not giving up their coveted window seat. According to the post, the drama unfolded when the family boarded the flight and the six year old realised she wasn't seated next to the window, leading to a "full-blown" meltdown, reports the Mirror .
The parents then tried to guilt-trip the passenger into surrendering their seat because she was "just a kid". Venting on the popular subreddit "Am I The A**hole? ", the passenger wrote: "I was on a domestic flight, and I had specifically booked a window seat because I love looking out at the view, it's one of the few things I actually enjoy about flying." "The dad had an aisle seat, the mum was in the middle, and the kid was supposed to sit in the other aisle seat.
Everything seemed fine until the girl realised she wasn't sitting by the window. She immediately started complaining. 'I want the window.
I want the window.' Her parents tried to calm her down, but she quickly escalated into a full-blown tantrum, crying and yelling about how she wanted my seat." The passenger claimed the father asked them to swap seats with his daughter, suggesting it "would be nice" and "wouldn't hurt".
However, the passenger politely declined, explaining they had specifically reserved their seat. The father seemed unhappy with this response, and the passenger recalled: "I reiterated that I understood his frustration but didn't think his daughter's tantrum was a valid reason for me to give up a seat I specifically reserved. He sighed and tried to push further, but I stood my ground.
" The child continued to cry for around 10 minutes before her mother calmed her down with a tablet. However, the tension between the passenger and the parents remained, with the passenger sensing judgmental looks from them throughout the flight. Upon landing, the passenger overheard the mother making a comment about people having "no heart".
This interaction left the passenger questioning their decision, wondering if they had been too inflexible. They reflected: "This made me wonder if I had been too rigid. I know kids can be a handful, but I also feel like giving in would've taught her that throwing a tantrum gets her what she wants.
Still, I couldn't shake off the guilt." Nevertheless, many Reddit users supported the passenger's stance, arguing the child needed to learn a lesson. One user suggested a possible response: "My window isn't the only window on this plane, you could have paid extra like I did, and chosen any window available.
" Another user chimed in, backing the decision: "You paid for and intentionally booked the window seat because it mattered to you. It's not your responsibility to accommodate someone else's poor planning or their child's tantrum." A third person chimed in with a dose of parental wisdom: "I am a mum of three.
Kids get explained that they can't have that seat as it's already occupied, end of it. Time for a game." Meanwhile, another commenter shared a personal anecdote highlighting tough love: "My daughter lay on the pavement crying when she realised she wasn't going to be bought a treat.
My mother and I kept on walking, she didn't have a tantrum again." For all the latest news from Dublin and surrounding areas visit our homepage . Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp.
