Pacific Islands University, PIU, has signed an agreement with a regional organization to help boost Bible translations in Pacific languages. PIU and Summer Institute of Linguistics, SIL, Pacific, a member organization of Wycliffe Bible Translators, entered into a memorandum of understanding, MOU, in order to further Bible translation education in Micronesia, PIU said in a press release. The MOU's objectives, according to the release, are to build vision and capacity for Bible translation as a mission and ministry of the church, equip Pacific Islanders for Bible translation, and "to build capacity for Pacific Islanders to think theologically in their own language and context.

" "We're blessed by this partnership with SIL Pacific Group that will further PIU's mission in Micronesia," PIU President Ian Richards said in a statement. The signing of the MOU at PIU on Guam was led by Richards, along with PIU board of trustees chairman and former Gov. Felix Camacho, and vice president for academics Paul Drake.

The SIL Pacific Group officials present for the MOU signing were led by director Paulus-Jan Kieviet and Bible translation project advisor Ken Dixon. Bible translation consultant Peter Knapp is also a part of the project.

"Since translation is the work of the church, we hope to give PIU students a vision for translating songs, books and commentaries into their own languages, as well as becoming translators for other languages around the world," Dixon said in the release. Pacific Islands University is a nationally accredited, non-profit university providing Christian higher education in Micronesia and the Pacific since 1976. SIL Pacific Group is a member organization of Wycliffe Bible Translators, named after John Wycliffe, who was the first person to translate the Bible into English.

The goal of Wycliffe and SIL is to translate the Bible so that people can read it in the language that speaks to their heart..
