Mike Tomlin wants to fix one key issue from the 2024 season.

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and his staff have an issue that might have flown under the radar to the common fan, but became evident to him throughout the 2024 season. In January, Tomlin noted a concerning uptick in soft-tissue injuries.

In 2024, the team moved on from 23-year veteran Marcel Pastoor and his staff to hire Phil Matusz , then the head of the Boston College football program. According to a study by Steelers Now, the Steelers lost over 60 games in 2024 to soft-tissue injuries. Tomlin said at the NFL Owners Meetings the team is still studying how they can fix their ways throughout the season and offseason to reduce those injuries.

"That’s ongoing. The proof is in the pudding as we begin to train and prepare our group, and the results will speak for themselves, but certainly we’ve been focused and working hard in that area,” Tomlin said. Matusz’s strength and conditioning staff graded out far worse than Pastoor’s staff from the year before in the NFLPA survey.

They ranked dead last in the strength staff report after hiring Matusz to turnover the staff. In his first year, it does not appear the players were satisfied with his job. Paired with the injuries racking up, and the Steelers will have to find solutions to those issues.
