, The Steelers are on the lookout for a QB1 after moving on from Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in free agency. Rooney spoke to reporters on Monday from the league’s owners meetings in Palm Beach, Florida. He indicated there were “positive signs” from Rodgers’ camp about a possible deal.
But he warned that the clock is ticking and he hadn’t expected such lengthy negotiations. “We keep hearing that he’s, I guess, headed in our direction,” Rooney told ESPN.“So that seems to be all signs are positive so far.
”“Not forever, but a little while longer,’ Rooney added when pressed on how much longer the Steelers could wait.“I didn’t envision it taking this long.”Over the weekend, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin indicated there was no deadline the team were working to.
“Not to my knowledge,” Tomlin said, per ESPN. “I don’t know that we’ve approached it from a deadline perspective. “Certainly, as I mentioned, you’d like to have settled circumstances, but deadlines don’t often bring that to a head.
”Rodgers, a four-time MVP, spent the majority of his career with the Green Bay Packers. He won a Super Bowl ring with the franchise in 2011 and left to join the Jets in 2022. But he suffered a devastating Achilles injury just moments into his debut in New York, KO’ing his first season.
Injuries will be still a concern for the Steelers, who have brought back former backup QB Mason Rudolph for 2025. Rodgers could command a contract north of $40million, according to NFL Insider Rich Eisen. “I think [Aaron Rodgers is] gonna start with a four.
North of [$40 million],” Eisen said.“How about this? Two years, $70 million, with incentives that can pop it up more.”Rodgers’ previous deal with the Jets was for three years and reached up to over $112m.
New York are taking a $35m cap hit to let Rodgers play elsewhere in 2025 after deciding to move on and add ex-Steeler Fields..
