PIL in Supreme Court seeks end to 'VIP culture' at Kumbh

A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court alleging that a special VIP arrangement at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj may have contributed to a deadly stampede. NEW DELHI: Alleging that a special arrangement made for VIPs, for which a large area was demarcated at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, was one of the reasons for the stampede, a PIL was filed in Supreme Court seeking its intervention to direct Centre and states to ensure safety of devotees at religious gatherings and for "minimisation of VIP treatment". "One reason for the stampede is there was not adequate space for public and a large area was left open and vacant for VIP visits. In our country, VIP culture still remains prevalent.

On various occasions, it has been noticed that bureaucrats and public servants in rural areas consider themselves rulers and conveniently abuse the law," the petition filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari said. The plea said it should be the responsibility of not only UP govt but all states to ensure safety as people from all states go for Kumbh. He said VIP movement should not create danger to safety of devotees.

"Whenever dignitaries, bureaucrats, politicians and public servants pass through a particular route or visit a public place like temples, it results in traffic menace with no regulation from govt authorities, this leads to chaos, anarchy, and blockade of roads thereby causing severe inconveniences to the public at large," the plea stated..
