A bonfire night full of fireworks and flames raised thousands of pounds for charity. The event has been held in the village of Newick, near Lewes, since 1937, with a fancy dress procession, torch bearers, fireworks and a giant bonfire. Figures taking part in the procession include smugglers and Guy Fawkes, as well as an accompanying brass band.
This year, the event collected £2,753 for a range of charities and causes, including Newick Preschool, St Peter and St James Hospice in Lewes and the burns unit at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead. The procession makes its way to the bonfire (Image: Ellis Skelton) The event is organised by the Newick Bonfire Society, whose members say they pride themselves on “fire, noise and tradition”. After its latest success, the society said: “We would like to thank everybody who has supported us over the past few weeks, our members who have worked tirelessly to put on such an amazing night, our supporters, our kindred societies for joining us and the whole community of Newick.

He said: "First time going to Newick Bonfire yesterday was incredible.
"One of the best I've been too with a long procession and magnificent firework display.".
