PHOTOS: Surprise! 'Sprinter' shows up in parts of Canada this week

It's been quite the 'sprinter' unfolding across the eastern half of Canada this week, with bouts of cold and snowfall coating portions of Ontario, Quebec and the East Coast.

Spring continues to sputter along this week with reminders that April does bring late-winter-like weather . While parts of the Prairies are dealing with warmth and thunderstorm threats , the East is a much different story. A highly amplified jet stream pattern is the root cause of an extreme temperature pattern across North America this week, with the cold air allowing snow to filter into a good portion of Eastern Canada.

DON’T MISS: Toronto braces for one of its coldest April days as temperatures drop Breaking it down further, Arctic air moved across eastern Ontario this early work week, leading to a shot of snowfall. Meanwhile, more snow is en route for the Great Lakes region this week . A weak system will develop for Thursday, crossing south of the Great Lakes, bringing another wet snow potential in southern Ontario.

Good news for Quebec: The system will fizzle out before affecting it. While a brief reprieve from the cold is forecast this weekend, frequent troughs will allow for more chances of moderated Arctic air to move across Eastern Canada . And, with more cold available in the East, any incoming storms will be watched closely for the chance of a wintry mix.
