AMID the rapidly changing regional and global landscape, the Philippine Army is strategically shifting its focus from internal security to bolstering its external security operations (ESO) capabilities.At the heart of this crucial pivot is the Philippine Army modernization program, which is anchored on two cornerstone pieces of legislation: Republic Act 7898 or the AFP Modernization Act of 1995, and Republic Act 10349 or the Revised AFP Modernization Act, which spans three horizons."Our modernization is directly proportional to the effectiveness and efficiency of the equipment we acquire," notes the Army leadership, highlighting the strategic acquisition of defense assets that significantly enhance the ground forces' ESO capabilities.Recent acquisitions include light tanks, armored personnel carriers, tactical support bridges and mine detectors. These assets have bolstered the army's ability to deal with diverse security threats while improving force mobility, combat effectiveness and logistical support.Additionally, medium lift multipurpose aeromedical helicopters, modern mortars and forward support equipment will enhance combat operations.Particularly notable is the acquisition of Joint Tactical Combat Vehicles that will bolster interoperability with the Philippine Air Force and the Philippine Navy. The Philippine Army is also strengthening its digital capabilities through a cyber enhancement program, funded under the 2024 General Appropriation Act.The Philippine Army modernization program reflects a comprehensive approach to national defense, enabling the Philippine Army to better defend the country's territory, maintain situational awareness and ensure rapid deployment in response to rapidly evolving security challenges.
