KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas cancelled all of its Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations this year, including its open house scheduled to be held in Kuching, Sarawak, on April 11. According to 'The Borneo Post', the cancellation was done out of respect for the victims of the gas pipeline blast in Putra Heights."On behalf of the board and management of Petronas, we regret to inform you that all Petronas Hari Raya celebrations across the group have been cancelled.
"This is a mark of respect and solidarity with the communities affected by the recent health and safety incident in Subang Jaya, and the frontliners who are working to support the recovery efforts," the company was quoted as saying.The Petronas gas pipeline blast on April 1 caused fire to shoot up 30 metres into the sky with temperatures reaching 1,000°C until it altered the landscape of the area by forming a 32-metre-deep crater covering an area around 70x80 feet wide.It also destroyed a row of houses and the belongings within a 500m radius of the incident.
A total of 235 premises were affected by the fire with 87 completely burnt and 148 damaged.Around 400 vehicles were also affected with 225 burnt and 174 damaged. The Health Ministry announced that 48 out of 134 victims are still receiving treatment at hospitals and clinics.
It said of the 48 patients, 30 were in the ministry's facilities whereas 18 were in private hospitals.As at 3pm yesterday, no deaths were recorded following the blast. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
