Chennai: A candidate who lost from the Chennai Central parliamentary constituency in the 2024 general has moved Madras high court seeking to declare the election of DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran as null and void. Admitting the plea, Justice N Anand Venkatesh has directed Dayanidhi Maran and the Election Commission of India (ECI) to respond to the election petition by Sep 26. According to M L Ravi, president of Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi, though the campaign for the Lok Sabha ended on Apr 17, DMK issued advertisements in all newspapers calling the voters to vote for its symbol ‘Rising Sun’.

This was in violation of the Representation of the People Act, 951, and amounts to corrupt practice under the law, he said. He further alleged that many election expenses made by Dayanidhi Maran were suppressed in the final expense account submitted by him to the ECI. Similarly, Justice G Jayachandran admitted another separate election petition moved by BJP candidate Nainar Nagendran challenging the election of Congress MP Robert Bruce from Tirunelveli parliamentary constituency.
