Petition claims Bedi has close ties with former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and that political influence played a role in the selection process PTC Web desk: A petition has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the appointment of Punjab’s newly appointed Advocate General (AG), Maninderjit Singh Bedi. Advocate Jagmohan Singh Bhatti, who filed the plea, has alleged that the appointment violates Article 165(1) of the Indian Constitution. Bhatti said under Article 165(1), only an individual qualified to be appointed as a High Court judge and with substantial experience in arguing major cases can be appointed as the Advocate General.
He further alleged that Bedi does not meet these qualifications and that his appointment was made on political grounds rather than merit. The petition also claims that Bedi has close ties with former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal , suggesting that political influence played a role in the selection process. In his plea, Bhatti has named Punjab Chief Secretary, Advocate General, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann , former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, and Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha as respondents.
The petition was filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court registry today, and the court is expected to hear the case by Friday. - With inputs from agencies.
