If your property is looking a ittle bit dull after a cold winter, fear not, because there’s something you can plant in your garden now to ensure that when the sun is here, your garden will be filled with colour. Gardening with Ish shared that his “favourite flower” was a peony , and these can bring “colour and height” to your garden. He noted: “Following my gardening tips for these will ensure you get a great peony year after year.
" Ish also said it’s an ideal flower for beginners – and it's great for “tall flower fans” too. Apparently, the plant can “last up to ten years". And to make the idea even more appealing, they can also “give you an abundance of cut flowers after the second or third year”.
He also suggested that “if you’re getting married in the next couple of years and want your own flowers - try peonies”. Ish said it’s best to put them in the ground as “their roots can get quite big,” but a large pot “should be okay”. He continued: “They need free-draining soil, and they don’t need to be planted too deep.
In fact, only about an inch-deep is enough for this. One of the most common questions I get asked about peonies is ‘Why doesn't mine flower even after a couple of years?’ “And it’s all about the depth of the root. If you plant these fairly shallow, so below an inch of soil, then that cold snap will leap it into action when it gets to spring, and it produces flowers.
Too deep, you’ll find you only get foliage”. Ish explained that peonies have “little shoots known as eyes” and it’s important to “make sure those eyes are only about an inch and a half below the soil level”. He then demonstrated him “shoving only an inch-worth” of soil over the top of an eye.
“Believe me, that’s all it needs”. Ish reiterated it was best to put them in the ground, sharing that once you’ve put it in, you should “thoroughly water it”. “Do not worry about the cold temperatures,” he shared, as “peonies do absolutely fine in cold temperatures, they’re incredibly hardy, and the foliage dies down every year and this will be up in no time”.
He finished the video by saying: “So, if you want flowers for the late spring, and early summer, get yourself some peonies”. The video garnered more than 500 likes since it was posted – and people are excited to give it a go. One commenter said: "Wow they are glorious – I had them in my wedding bouquet.
" Another wrote: "I was looking for a video like this! Amazing." And a third added: "I absolutely lovely the peony." So will you be planting peonies? Let us know in the comments.
