It’s one of those essential kitchen condiments that we use every day in our cooking, but people are only just realising there’s a mind-blowing way to use your olive oil - and it’s all in the cap. If you regularly use olive oil when cooking at home, you’ll probably have had the odd slip up where you’ve poured too much into your pan. But the issue of over pouring can be prevented by a little-known hack that people are describing as a “game changer”.

A video posted on TikTok demonstrates that you can stop olive oil spillages and better control the pour simply by utilising the lid. When you open a bottle of olive oil you have to remove a ring pull to get the contents out, but instead of throwing this away you should make use of it. The viral bottle hack suggests that instead of discarding the ring tab, you should turn it upside down and reinsert it into the neck of the olive oil bottle.

The tab then blocks the large hole in the top and leaves just a small gap around the edge for the oil to get through. It means that when you come to pour out your olive oil, the flow is much slower so you can better control the amount of oil you’re adding to your pan, meaning much less wastage when cooking. TikTok user @Oranizedandsimplified4u shared the “game changer” hack on their account to demonstrate how it works, saying it’ll save you “no more pours”.

The hack has garnered high praise from fellow TikTok users, with many taking to the comments to say they had tried it. One user wrote: “Def game changer!” Another said: “IT WORKED.” “Incredible.

I did not know that”, added a third Olive oil has numerous health benefits that make it worth adding to your diet in small doses. According to Healthline, it is rich in antioxidants which helps to lower your risk of chronic diseases, fight inflammation and lower LDL - “bad” - cholesterol. The predominant fatty acid in olive oil is oleic acid, which studies suggest reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, which in turn can help to lower the risk of some cancers and improve brain function.

It is also thought to help regulate blood sugar levels, which may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, while its antimicrobial properties can help to fight off bacterial infections. Olive oil company Brightland recommends having between one and two tablespoons of olive oil per day. The company states: “As a general rule of thumb, between one and two tablespoons a day is a good amount of olive oil to consume.

This goes for both olive oil that you drink for health benefits and also olive oil that you consume with food as part of your regular cooking process. “While there is no established upper limit where an amount of olive oil becomes “bad for you” or “unsafe,” many people do find that if they eat or drink excessive amounts of oil, it can make them feel a bit nauseous. Oils are also relatively high in calories, which is another reason why you want to enjoy them in moderation.
