KUALA TERENGGANU: A 69-year-old pensioner from a teacher training institute has become a victim of an online scam, losing more than RM700,000.The man, who is also a contractor, came across an advertisement last December on Google for a company called Stocks Qs Secure, which promised high returns on investments.Marang district police chief Superintendent Mohd Sofian Redzuan said the victim was instructed to enter his personal details via a link provided, which claimed to facilitate the investment process.
The victim was also directed to make numerous transfers to different bank accounts."Between Feb 5 and March 27, he made 22 transactions, including a bank draft, transferring a total of RM703,296.25 to 15 separate local company bank accounts.
"The victim only realised he had been scammed when the promised returns failed to materialise, leading him to file a police report on Wednesday."Investigations are now underway, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he said when contacted.He also urged the public to exercise caution when encountering suspicious online investment offers.
He advised the public to verify the legitimacy of investment companies with the Securities Commission and Bank Negara Malaysia to avoid falling prey to fraud.© New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
