Former Penn State star wide receiver Chris Godwin was in the midst of a career year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But Godwin suffered what appeared to be a serious injury against the Baltimore Ravens. Godwin was tackled after a reception late in the fourth quarter in Tampa Bay’s 41-31 loss to the Ravens on Monday night.

Godwin stayed down following the tackle with apparent left leg injury. ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” broadcast opted not to show a replay of the reception and ensuing tackle. Godwin was carted off the field at Raymond James Stadium while quarterback Baker Mayfield and teammates took a knee in silence around him.

Godwin, in his eighth year with the Bucs, was putting together a stellar season. In seven games counting Monday night, the former Penn State standout hauled in a league-leading 50 receptions for 576 receiving yards, the second-most yards in the NFL behind only Cincinnati Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase. Godwin, after dominating in 2016 and helping Penn State to a Big Ten championship, was a third-round selection in the 2017 NFL draft by the Bucs.

This season is Godwin’s last under contract with Tampa Bay after inking a three-year, $60 million deal with the franchise ahead of the 2022 campaign.
