To help with this, David Denyer, an expert florist with over 25 years in the industry and a winner of numerous coveted floral and gardening awards from Eflorist, has shared an easy trick. He said: “Most people make simple mistakes that stop their peace lily from blooming, but the fix is easier than you think.” David claimed: “With the right care, a peace lily can last five years or more, but the individual flowers can bloom for eight weeks or more than that with this one trick: deadheading .
” Deadheading is the term used for the removal of fading or dead flowers from plants. It is a 10-second job that is done to keep plants looking attractive and encourage more blooms, even when it comes to houseplants like peace lilies. David instructed: “As soon as the bloom starts to fade, trim it off at the base.
This encourages the plant to put its energy into producing fresh flowers rather than keeping old ones alive. Think of it as giving your plant a little refresh.” After deadheading, if the leaves and stalks on your peace lily appear weak and damaged, yellow or with brown tips, remove them to keep your plant fresh and healthy.
Old outer leaves should also be trimmed. To avoid spreading any potential diseases, ensure to wipe your shears with a cloth dipped in alcohol. Also, it's a good idea to wear gloves for your own safety, as the sap can be irritating to the skin.
You can also prune the leaves of your peace lily if it’s grown too big and bushy. Starting from the plant's base, cut the stalks of larger leaves that may prevent sufficient light exposure to younger shoots and blooms The florist added that another factor that “affects longevity” is temperature stability. David explained: “Peace lilies hate extreme conditions, so keeping them away from radiators, air conditioners, and drafts will help them stay strong.
