In a striking demonstration of the controversial use of federal authority in Edo State’s political landscape, a leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP ) was recently rescued from a troubling police abduction attempt. The incident unfolded as tensions heightened surrounding the governorship election scheduled for Saturday. The victim, a prominent PDP figure from Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, was captured in a viral video being forcibly dragged into a police vehicle by officers in Benin City.
The video, which quickly spread online, shows the man being manhandled without clear justification. Political analysts have expressed concerns about the increasing militarization of the electoral process in Edo State. Dr.
Olufemi Ajayi, a political science professor at the University of Benin, commented, “This incident highlights a disturbing trend of federal forces being employed in ways that undermine democratic processes. On Monday night, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki said the PDP will sign the Peace Accord if arrested members of the party were released. Obaseki, who stated this after the party’s caucus meeting at the Government House in Benin City, said granting bail to the arrested members would allow them to come back home to their families and participate in the democratic process..
