The leadership crisis in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) continues to heighten, with the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, accusing the PDP governors of undermining a court order. In a petition filed on February 1, 2025, Anyanwu called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the matter, claiming that the recent communique issued by the governors was an “invitation to anarchy.” The communique, issued following the governors’ meeting in Asaba, Delta State, on January 31, advised the National Working Committee (NWC) to implement the Enugu Court of Appeal judgment that favoured the nomination of SKD Ude Okoye as the National Secretary of the party.
However, Anyanwu, who has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, pointed out that a Court of Appeal ruling on January 13, 2025, had ordered that the status quo ante bellum should be maintained. He argued that the governors “cannot claim ignorance of this position of the law” before issuing their statement, which he claimed conflicts with the court’s decision. In the petition titled “Security Alert: The Advice of the PDP Governors’ Forum to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP an Invitation to Cause and Affront to the Rule of Law,” Anyanwu warned that the governors’ actions could lead to further instability: “It will be an invitation to chaos and an affront to the judiciary and the rule of law, especially when the matter is pending before the superior courts for determination.
” Anyanwu also accused Ude Okoye of unlawfully disrupting a PDP Board of Trustees meeting on January 29, 2025, claiming that Okoye’s actions were “completely unlawful and in total disregard of the judiciary and the rule of law.” He urged the police to prevent any further violations and to maintain order. “It is saddening that the governors, in their expected wisdom, have allowed themselves to be deceived by the sponsors of Ude Okoye,” Anyanwu said, referring to the alleged forgery of PDP guidelines used to secure a judgment in Okoye’s favour.
The embattled National Secretary stressed that he remains the legally elected National Secretary, asserting: “The Constitution of Nigeria and the courts of the land tower above all.” He vowed to resist any attempts to remove him, adding, “As I said earlier, there is nothing in that communique to worry about.”.
