Darts pro Matthew Edgar has revealed that his walk-on song was once rejected at World Darts Championship . The 38-year-old, a three-time qualifier for the event, typically uses Buck Rogers by Feeder, but attempted to switch it up during the 2021 edition of the tournament. However, the powers-that-be rejected his proposal, explaining to Edgar that they didn't fancy him "chopping and changing" tracks due to his lower profile in the sport.
"I'm going to give you some insight into how it [walk-on songs] works," he shared in a recent TikTok video . "With this, the walk-on, you simply just present your song to the PDC, who'll present it to the broadcaster. "The copyrights, we [the players] don't worry about that too much.
That's to do with the licensing in the arena and that's something we don't have to think about as a player, we just suggest what we'd like to use." Edgar continued: "I suggested Buck Rogers [by] Feeder. Great song.
.. now I've never really known of a player getting their song choice rejected before - but mine was rejected for a reason.
"Mine came in the second round [of the 2021 World Darts Championship]. I'd won the first game against Maik Kuivenhoven and I was playing Mensur Suljovic in round two. I was wearing a Hulk Hogan -inspired shirt.
I wanted to come on giving it all the Hulk Hogan stuff, start 'Hulking up', and I wanted to use Hulk Hogan's [theme song] 'Real American', [but] it was rejected. "And the reason it was rejected is because of familiarity. They wanted people to get familiar with the song that I was using at the time, and not be chopping and changing throughout [the tournament].
" Even after having his appeal denied, Edgar still rocked up in Hulk Hogan's iconic colours as he graced the stage at Alexandra Palace for his first ever second-round match at the tournament. His efforts, though, were in vain against Suljovic who clinched a solid 3-1 win. He can take some solace in the fact that he probably would've been eliminated at the next hurdle, with two-time champion Gary Anderson - who himself advanced all the way to the final that year - waiting for him in the next round.
Although his defeat to Suljovic remains his final match in the competition to date. In 2022, Edgar entered Q-School, aiming to regain his Tour Card , but Nathan Rafferty cut his journey short in the semis. This, agonisingly, left him just shy of the Tour Card rankings in the Q-School leaderboard.
In the two years since, he's bagged a couple of ranking WDF titles. Still, a return ticket to the PDC tour evades him. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
