Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has intensified action against property tax defaulters and sealed 202 properties in the last three days. A senior civic official said the administration has identified over 10,000 properties with pending dues of over Rs1 lakh each. The action of sealing the properties will continue until Jan 7.
"We sealed 65 properties on Saturday, 63 properties on Sunday and 74 properties on Monday," a PCMC official said. He further mentioned that many people rushed to pay their dues, fearing action. "As many as 398 property owners paid their pending dues worth Rs9 crore after the civic teams reached their address to seal properties," the official said.
There are a total of 6.3 lakh registered properties in PCMC limits, including residential, commercial, and industrial. The civic body has collected property tax worth Rs569 crore in the current financial year.
Avinash Shinde, assistant municipal commissioner and head of the PCMC's property tax department, said civic officials often face difficulties while sealing commercial properties that have schools, hospitals, or any other establishments that provide services to people. "The owners of such establishments should pay their dues on time to avoid action as it can cause inconvenience to people. The municipal corporation should not be blamed if such properties were sealed," he said.
Shinde said the civic body is also taking action against govt offices if their dues are high. Pradeep Jambhale Patil, PCMC additional municipal commissioner, said the defaulters are served notices before sealing their properties. "The owners are informed that their properties are eligible to be sealed as per the rules, and they should make payments to avoid action.
Some of them, however, still fail to comply with the notice, following which we initiate action," he said.
