Manchester United’s current team has arguably been the most criticised team in the club’s Premier League history and one only needs to look at the league table to know why. There have been mitigating factors but it is undisputable that the Man Utd squad hasn’t performed like the sum of its parts, let alone more than it. Right on cue, the ex-players added to the circus, with Paul Scholes regularly popping up with comments that regularly generated discussion.

Apparently, one Man Utd player took offence to some of his comments and well through the trouble of inviting him to Carrington, only for the story to end in an anti-climax. That’s what happened recently, only this time, it was a player who took offence and invited him all the way to Carrington to have a talk with him.

In true Scholes fashion, the Man Utd legend gave him his number, ready to defend his stand, only for the episode to end with a whimper. Speaking on The Overlap, Scholes said: “Players can be a little bit touchy. I had a player who, this year, contacted me, wasn’t happy with some of the things I said.

He wanted to meet me, invited me to the training ground, at Carrington. “I said yeah, of course, no problem, here’s my number and he never got back to me. I would have done it.

I’m saying things that I believe.”Scholes has fanned flames needlesslyThis type of stuff is exactly what will probably infuriate Ruben Amorim because by telling this story but not naming the player, he’s effectively asked a whole fanbase to start speculating. That is the kind of scrutiny and uncertainty any club can do without especially borne out of comments by someone who loves the club.

It would have been ideal if Scholes kept this to himself because even giving the name of that player would have made his life miserable. What’s done now is a spark has been lit for fans to fan the flames of, with the first action being done by Paul Scholes. United haven’t played well this season and no expert is needed to make that claim, but ex-players contributing to the environment surrounding the team doesn’t help.
