Paul McCartney is well-known for his time in The Beatles, but many fans will be shocked to find out he also had a hand in creating the name for an iconic American punk rock band

Paul McCartney wrote some of the most iconic songs of all time , but he also had a hand in naming a beloved punk rock band. At the height of The Beatles' fame, Paul and his bandmates found it impossible to walk down the street without being recognized and hounded by fans. As a result, Paul and John decided to use fake names when booking hotel rooms .

Paul's adopted name went on to inspire a band other than The Beatles - The Ramones. "Paul [McCartney] would check into a hotel using the name Paul Ramon," Johnny Ramone once revealed. "Dee Dee was a big fan, so he changed his name to Dee Dee Ramone.

We decided to call the band the Ramones." Dee Dee managed to convince the other members to adopt the surname and the rest is history. Marky Ramone has also recalled the story.

"The Beatles used to tour...

before they were The Beatles, they were called The Silver Beatles, and all the girls running after them, even the guys," he said. "So the next thing you know, Paul McCartney would sign into a hotel room as Paul Ramone. Dee Dee looked at this and said, 'Let's call ourselves The Ramones.

'" Marky was also forced to speak out about a rumor focusing on how The Ramones got their name. "There's another story, too: they opened up the phone book and threw a dart at it – that didn't happen," he said. Marky added, "So it was from Paul Ramone, who used to check into a hotel room.

But he should have gotten rid of the name Paul because immediately you go, 'I wonder if he's still doing that.' "So it should've been like Carl Ramone, or Bobby Ramone, you know what I mean, something like that. But it all worked out.

" And The Beatles didn't just inspire The Ramones' name. The US band was heavily influenced by the Liverpool-born rockers, with their debut album sounding very similar to The Beatles. The Ramones shot to fame in the 1970s and continued to play together until 1996.

Over their career, the band played more than 2,000 concerts. Click here to follow the Mirror US on Google News to stay up to date with all the latest news, sport and entertainment stories.
