PAU alumni call for introduction of agriculture as subject in govt schools

Ludhiana: Agricultural Students Association Punjab ( ASAP ) is demanding introduction of subjects related to agriculture in government schools. Most of the students of the association are alumni of the Punjab Agricultural University ( PAU ) and are either unemployed or are not satisfied with the number of jobs available in the sector. These students met with agriculture minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian during the Kisan Mela and handed over a memorandum of their demands.

They all requested the government to include agriculture as a subject from XI to X which will help generate more employment opportunities in the schools. Notably, during the previous government’s tenure in 2018, the Agriculture Master Cadre was abolished. As a result, the link is unavailable and the agriculture degree holders and students pursuing their degrees are finding it difficult in getting jobs.



Also, no teachers in the field deprive students of the opportunity to pursue agriculture as a subject. The students have been continuously struggling to reinstate the recruitment of agriculture teachers . A committee constituted by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Secretariat on May 17, 2023, recommended the reinstatement of the recruitment of agriculture teachers and make the subject compulsory.

However, no notification has been issued by the government in this regard. Angrej Mann, a PAU alumnus, said: “Agriculture teachers in schools can spread the spirit of agriculture. The government has been consistently ignoring our demands.

We met Punjab agriculture minister. Even the vice-chancellor apprised the minister of the issue.” Vice-chancellor SS Gosal said: “Ours is an agrarian state.
