Super Bowl LVIII ended with the Kansas City Chiefs beating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime. This was quarterback Patrick Mahomes' second consecutive, and third overall, Super Bowl victory, but it was Brock Purdy's first trip to the Super Bowl. Mahomes was drafted with the 10th overall pick in 2017.
Purdy was the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, earning that year's distinction of being "Mr. Irrelevant." Both quarterbacks played in the Big 12 in college, but had very different draft grades coming out of college.
Still, only two seasons after Purdy joined the NFL, they matched up in the Super Bowl. Purdy and the Niners were on the losing end of that first matchup between the two quarterbacks. They will meet for the second time in Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season.

As the 10th overall pick in 2017, he signed a four-year, $16,425,786 deal with the Chiefs. Being a first round pick, Kansas City had the opportunity to pick up Mahomes' fifth-year option in 2021.
Instead, Mahomes was signed to a 10-year, $450 million contract ahead of the 2020 season. The contract has him playing for Kansas City through the 2031 season. Mahomes will be a free agent when he is 37 years old.
There is technically an out after 2027, where the Chiefs would only eat $5.4 million in dead cap, but unless Mahomes' career tanks that likely won't be utilized. Mahomes' contract was re-structured to pay him more money up front and keep his salary current with the other giant quarterback deals that have been signed.

There has been a rise in the last two years for massive quarterback contracts.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love hasn't taken the Packers to the NFC Championship Game (yet) and was still given a four-year, $220 million contract after one year as the starting quarterback. Purdy will likely command four years and $250 million, the nuance of the deal will likely come down to whether or not the 49ers want to make him the highest-paid quarterback based on average per year (APY). If that's the case, they would have to beat four years, $240 million which is what the Dallas Cowboys gave to Dak Prescott.
San Francisco has plenty of mouths to feed on both sides of the ball. It's possible Purdy takes less to ensure the 49ers can surround him with elite talent. If he wants to maximize his profits, the 49ers may need to get creative with their roster to get a deal done.
