It was announced Tuesday that Hunt had been signed to the practice squad as are facing between 6-8 weeks with just Carson Steele and Samaje Perine as their remaining options at running back. Hunt had a breakout rookie season but ended up being released by the Chiefs during his second year after a video surfaced of the running back allegedly pushing a woman to the ground before kicking her. The video went viral on social media and the NFL had no choice but to place Hunt on the commissioner's exempt list. Moments after the NFL made the announcement, the Chiefs released a statement clarifying that Hunt had been released from the roster.

"Earlier this year, we were made aware of an incident involving running back Kareem Hunt," the Chiefs said in a statement on Nov. 30, 2018. "At that time, the National Football League and law enforcement initiated investigations into the issue.

"As part of our internal discussions with Kareem, several members of our management team spoke directly to him. Kareem was not truthful in those discussions. The video released today confirms that fact.

We are releasing Kareem immediately." Hunt signed for the Browns ahead of the 2019 season, although he remained on the commissioner's exempt list and was suspended without pay for the first eight games of the year for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Hunt failed to find his previous form following the ordeal other than a comeback year in 2020 which saw him rush for 841 yards and six touchdowns, with another five receiving scores.

The injury to Nick Chubb allowed Hunt to operate as a backup behind Jerome Ford, but he was often used in the red zone. Hunt was the rushing yards leader in his rookie season with 1,327 and scored 11 touchdowns (eight rushing) for the Chiefs.

His numbers climbed in his second year before being cut, as he had 824 yards and 14 touchdowns (seven rushing) in 11 starts before his release..
