At one point in Monday's nail-biter between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes suffered what looked like a scary leg injury. The two-time All-Pro quarterback had to be helped off the field after sustaining a non-contact injury early in the fourth quarter, forcing Chiefs fans to hold their collective breath. Mahomes, however, soldiered on.

He played through the knock and ended up leading the two-time defending champions to a hard-fought 30-24 overtime victory against a determined Bucs side. Mahomes, who completed 34-of-44 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns spoke to reporters after the game to discuss his injury. According to the six-time Pro Bowler, he tried to "run off the field" after the knock but the coaching staff told him not to.

However, this wasn't before he was left in disbelief by head coach Andy Reid's instructions shortly after the injury occurred. "I thought he was joking," Mahomes said of Reid demanding that he come out of the game.

"He said it, I was like, 'C'mon, we're not doing this again.' "..

. He trusts me. Once the doctors checked it out and I was able to get back and do the drops again, he let me get back on the field.

After getting back on the field, Mahomes scored on a go-ahead touchdown pass with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. He then led the Chiefs to their game-winning drive in overtime to seal the deal. Thanks to Mahomes' heroics -- and Reid's trust in his quarterback -- the Chiefs have kept their unbeaten streak alive.

They are now 8-0 on the season and are looking very formidable in their quest for a third straight Super Bowl title.
