Following the establishment of a specialist hospital for eye ailments in Patna, the Bihar government is now working on expanding free eye testing facilities across other healthcare institutions. A tie-up with a private agency is also on the cards to ensure patients receive a full range of eye care services—from basic eye tests to prescription glasses—conveniently at hospital premises. A recent high-level meeting of the Health Department saw consensus on a proposal to establish separate eye examination wards in medical colleges and hospitals across all categories.

The responsibility for executing this plan has been handed over to the State Health Committee, which has already initiated the process. Once finalised, the selected agency will be tasked with opening these centres in hospitals of all categories.

Space within the hospital premises will be allotted for these centres. These vision centres will primarily screen patients for cataracts and other common eye conditions. They will also prescribe glasses and refer patients needing advanced medical consultation or surgical intervention.

If all goes as planned, the groundwork for these vision centres will begin in May or June, and services are expected to roll out within a month to six weeks thereafter. READ MORE: Bihar Receives Rs 588.73 Crore Central Relief Fund For Natural Disasters, Aid Approved For Three Other States | Details.
