Following a very successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter , Ratatan — a spiritual successor to PSP's cult classic Patapon — is now confirmed for both PS5 and PS4. Publisher Game Source Entertainment announced the supported platforms for the game in an update on its website, where it also pencilled in a release sometime in 2025. The news comes accompanied by a brand new trailer, showing off plenty of new gameplay footage.
To recap, Ratatan is a rhythm-based, side-scrolling strategy game, with development led by designer Hiroyuki Kotani, best known for the Patapon series. Fundamentally, the new game is quite similar; the player inputs various commands to the beat of the music, telling the Cobun army onscreen to attack, march, fall back, and so on. However, while it may look quite familiar to any Patapon fans, Ratatan has some new ideas of its own.
As well as making commands to the army as a group, there are "actions that allow the Ratatan to move freely", with each unit type having unique skills. We also spotted numerous elemental effects you can employ during battles. It also includes roguelike elements, meaning your Cobun troops will level up and earn random new powers and rewards as you progress.
On top of that are fresh minigames to enjoy and support for online co-op multiplayer for four players. This looks very promising to us — the music and visuals are great, and the gameplay looks like the weird and wonderful series we know and love. Hopefully it sticks the landing when it arrives sometime next year.
