Saturday 155 Years Ago Millinery: Mrs. Beck has received a fine lot of the latest styles of millinery goods, including bonnets, flowers, trimmings, and the like, to which she invites attention by an advertisement in the Appeal. 140 Years Ago Wayside notes: Miss Lou Spencer has started a French class.

The more our Nevada shooters know of the California team the less they like ‘em. They are full of small jockeying tricks and do not come to the front in an open, manly way. 130 Years Ago Coast news: A strong flow of oil and gas was struck opposite the Second Street Park at Los Angeles.



Wedding anniversary: Parson Davis (of St. Peters Episcopal Church) and wife celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary. There was a jolly gathering of friends at the residence.

About 9 o’clock the band serenaded them, and the festivities were kept until a late hour. Many happy returns. 70 Years Ago Reds put mike at North Pole: Moscow reported that Russian scientists have installed a microphone at the North Pole.

The broadcast did not say who would be broadcasting over it. 60 Years Ago Sewells to open: Herbert A. Sewell announced that construction is underway for a 15-acre shopping center in Carson City on Highway 395 South, formerly the site of the outdoor theatre.

There will be a Sewell’s grocery store and five other businesses. Sunday 155 Years Ago Lumber: Nearly 100,000 feet of lumber were taken away by the Virginia and Truckee Railroad and shipped from here to Storey County. 140 Years Ago Birth: Conductor Crisler has just been made the happy father of a girl.

Happy is as far as it went, as the father almost wept to think the child could never run trains or vote. 130 Years Ago All sorts: The postmaster has hung a horse chain on the telegraph post in front of the post office (now Laxalt Building). He is at work on a mailbox.

The Appeal extends him the thanks of the community. 70 Years Ago Advertisement: “Sky-Vue Drive in Theater — ‘The Clown” with Red Skelton and Jane Greer. This comedy will please everyone! Also ‘Everything I have Is Yours’ with Marge and Gower Champion, plus cartoon.

” 60 Years Ago Souvenir dollars: The Carson City Chamber of Commerce has taken over full control of distribution of its Carson City Centennial “souvenir dollars.” The coins will be released as collector’s items or souvenir coins. When they were being minted, the Chamber proposed issuing them as “trade dollars,” to be used in the purchase of goods.

The coins would have replaced the vanished silver dollars during the centennial year. Monday 155 Years Ago Virginia City items: Two new locomotives for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad have arrived and are being set up. These are the “Nevada,” (No.

7) and the “Humboldt,” (No. 8) both very large and powerful engines. These engines were manufactured at the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia.

They employee 2,000 workmen and turn out 24 locomotives per month. 140 Years Ago For state senator: Evan Williams announces himself as candidate for state senator. Williams is superintendent of the Mexican Mill at Empire, and vice president of the Bullion & Exchange Bank of Carson.

130 Years Ago All sorts: A fruit wagon drove into town a few days ago with the words Oder-less Excavator Company in large letter on the side. Selling fruit from such a wagon struck a good many people as incongruous. 70 Years Ago Jack Lalanne: Professional physical culturists of Oakland, celebrated his birthday by becoming the first man ever to swim the icy mile-wide Golden Gate strait underwater.

He covered the distance in 45 minutes, using a frogman’s suit, a double oxygen bottle, over size flippers, mask and goggles. 60 Years Ago Advertisement: “Carson Theater, now showing, ‘Stage to Thunder Rock’ with Barry Sullivan, Marilyn Maxwell and Scott Brady. They rode a trail of vengeance and violence! And ‘The Son Captain Blood” with Sean Flynn.

They became semifinalists in the 1964-65 Merit Program through their outstanding performance on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test administered in more than 17,000 high schools.
