SALISBURY — Partners In Learning has announced its upcoming inclusive mini-conference, “The Power of Conversation,” on Saturday. The free event is open to the community and will be held in the SECU Clinical and Family Services Community Room at Partners In Learning at the Woods, located at 1775 MLK Jr Ave South in Salisbury. Childcare will be provided at no cost to attendees, however registration is required.

The mini-conference will also include a Transition Vendor Fair, hosted by Innovative Approaches, providing valuable community resources and information for families. The conference will feature insightful presentations from experts in the field of early childhood development and communication. The keynote address, “The Critical Role of Language in Early Brain Development,” will be led by Tiffany Powers, who will explore the profound impact of early language on brain development and lifelong success.



Attendees will gain practical skills for fostering rich language interactions and understanding the consequences of limited language acquisition. Following the keynote, Alana Ianello will present on “Teaching Functional Communication Skills.” That session will highlight the importance of communication training, explore various types of communication, and offer practical strategies for supporting language development through play and visual aids.

Participants will learn about the benefits of using ASL and AAC devices and how to address communication-related problem behaviors. The event will conclude with a crucial Panel Discussion: Language, Trauma, and Healing. Expert panelists will delve into the vital connection between trauma and communication in children.

Panelists include: Angel L. Thomas, MSW, LCSWA with Partners In Learning; Sommer Ewing, MA, LMFT, CATP with Nazareth Family and Children Connection; Mandy Earnhardt, MACC, LCMHCA with Main Street Meeting Place; Micah Ennis, MSW, Rowan County Social Services Director; and Jenya Comfort, LCMHCA, NCC with Counselor for Comfort Counseling and Partners In Learning. The session will cover how trauma affects a child’s ability to communicate, explore practical language strategies to support healing and resilience and emphasize the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for children to express their emotions.

The free mini-conference offers a valuable opportunity for parents, educators, caregivers, and community members to gain knowledge and practical skills in supporting early language development and communication in children of all abilities. Childcare training hours will be provided to childcare professionals.
