Swiss private equity firm Partners Group has finalized an agreement to acquire Australian data center operator GreenSquare Data Centers , committing up to AU$1.2 billion to establish a next-generation data center platform across Australia. GreenSquareDC, established in October 2022, is actively developing a data center in Belmont, Perth.

The four-story facility is set to offer 68,000 square meters of gross floor area on a 38,000-square-meter site, with the first stage anticipated to be completed by mid-2024. The company also plans to integrate renewable energy sources, including wind and solar farms, to power the Perth project. Expanding its footprint, GreenSquareDC has secured its first site in Sydney-a brownfield data center featuring an existing powered shell and an adjacent landbank, enabling the campus to scale up to 96 megawatts of compute capacity.

Additionally, the company has secured land options in strategic locations across Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, positioning itself to meet the growing demand for data center services in these regions. Nicholas Kuys, Managing Director of Infrastructure Asia at Partners Group, highlighted the sector's robust growth trajectory, stating,“Data centers are on a structural growth path supported by thematic tailwinds, including the increasing use of generative AI, growth in cloud adoption, and the migration of data center workloads to colocation sites.” He emphasized that the sector exhibits strong infrastructure characteristics driven by the essentiality of the service, long-term contracts, and significant capital intensity.

Walt Coulston, CEO of GreenSquareDC, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting that the company's customer-centric approach, efficient design, leading technology, and sustainability focus position it well in the market. He added,“The acquisition of our first site in Sydney provides GreenSquareDC with a speed-to-market advantage in serving our customers' near-term requirements.” Coulston looks forward to collaborating with Partners Group to leverage its significant experience in building infrastructure platforms globally to scale GreenSquareDC's offerings.

Partners Group, founded in 1996, manages over US$150 billion in assets globally, with its infrastructure business overseeing US$27 billion. Since 2021, the firm has invested approximately US$4 billion in data centers, including acquisitions of Nordic data center firm atNorth and US operator EdgeCore.
