Jaipur: A portion of the false ceiling collapsed in the passage between two operation theatres in the Sawai Man Singh Hospital’s trauma centre on Monday. The affected area is where the air conditioning unit is installed. According to the Jaipur Association of Resident Doctors (JARD), the operation theatre had been experiencing leakage from the false ceiling for the past 20-25 days.

The situation worsened when a part of the false ceiling fell. The resident doctors said that the false ceiling collapsed between the two OTs at the place where the doctors keep their equipment and devices for surgery. Dr Anurag Dhaker, trauma centre in-charge, confirmed the incident, stating, "The incident did not occur inside the main OT but at the entrance to OT.

We have called the electricity department and Public Works Department officials to repair it." He attributed the water seepage to the air conditioning system. Although no injuries were reported, the incident has underscored the ongoing risk to the safety of healthcare staff and patients.

JARD expressed its concern in a letter to the SMS medical college administration, emphasising the constant fear they work under due to the deteriorating roof ceiling and the risk of short circuits from the C-arm machine. They also mentioned previous instances where electrical current issues have compromised their safety. Dr Manohar Siyol, JARD president, stated, "We have refused to work in the OT where the false ceiling fell.
