ENGINEER Lemuel Paquibut and Fil-Am kegler Robert Sarvida topped the Sugbuanon Bowlers United (SugBU) Bowler of the Month tournament for November and December held last Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, at the SM Bowling Center of SM Seaside. Paquibut was crowned Bowler of the Month for November after upsetting Sarvida in the up-the-ladder finals 213-162.
Sarvida, who actually dominated the elimination round and earned the first finals berth with 1,132 pinfalls, settled for first-runner honors and was named as Bowler of the Month for December. Paquibut, who finished the eliminations with an eight-game aggregate of 1,046 pinfalls, advanced to the finals by edging out ex-Cebu Province administrator Noli Valencia 173-165 in the semis. Valencia, who had a 1,037 aggregate in the elims, bagged the second runner-up award.
He earlier defeated his young challenger Joma Avila 196-162 in Round 3 of the up-the-ladder phase. Avila, who only wound up sixth in the elimination round with 1,009 pinfalls, upstaged former national player Jomar Jumapao 240-193 to earn the right to face Valencia. The youtful Avila climbed his way up the ladder by chalking up 226 pinfalls, besting fellow young bowler GJ Buyco (160), Nestor Ranido (186), and German kegler Uwe Schulze (177) in the opening round.
Talent depth The recently-concluded tournament highlighted the depth of talent within the SugBU community, with seasoned veterans and rising stars alike showcasing their skills. Paquibut and Sarvida will next pit their skills against other monthly champions in the Bowler of the Year finale slated Jan. 5, next year.
