Chennai: Power supply to Chennai city and its suburban areas is expected to become more stable soon, as the new 230kV substation at Panjetty, Tiruvallur district, nears completion. The substation, being constructed at a cost of 256.45 crore, is about 75% complete.

Civil works and control room set up are nearly 95% finished, according to Tantransco officials. Electricity minister V Senthilbalaji recently instructed officials to expedite all power infrastructure projects. Following this, Tangedco chairman and managing director J Radhakrishnan inspected the Panjetty substation on Sunday and told Tantransco workers to ensure the facility is operational before August this year.

Once completed, the Panjetty substation will be connected to 400kV substations at Manali, Thervoy Kandigai (under construction), and Alamathi, in addition to serving as another 230kV hub. Chennai North TNPDCL superintendent engineer Veerapandian said while Panjetty already has a 110kV substation, the addition of the 230kV facility will significantly improve power load distribution across Gummidipoondi, Ponneri, and parts of the city. Meanwhile, TNPDCL has instructed field officers to clear dry vegetation from all 1,754 110kV and 33kV substations across state to prevent fire accidents during the summer.
