Pakistan sports community unites to celebrate ‘Peace Through Sports Day’

LAHORE - The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), in collaboration with the Softball Federation of Pakistan, the Pakistan Karate Federation, and other affiliated sports bodies, organized a series of impactful events nationwide on the occasion of International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, observed globally each year on April 6.

Led by the POA, sports federations across the country joined hands to symbolically raise white cards, reaffirming their commitment to promoting global harmony and empowering communities through athletic endeavors. The white card gesture, recognized internationally as a symbol of peace, was embraced by athletes, coaches, officials, and youth participants alike.

POA President Arif Saeed emphasised the power of sports as a tool for transformation. “Today, we join the global community in celebrating this symbolic day. Sport is a powerful platform that promotes peace, inclusion, and unity.

It’s our responsibility to promote access to sport and uphold its role in peacebuilding.” POA Secretary General M Khalid Mahmood noted that this global day serves as a reminder of Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful coexistence. “By raising white cards, we and our member federations send a clear message of love and peace from Pakistan to the world.

” Tehmina Asif, Associate Secretary General of POA, stressed the inclusive nature of sport. “Pakistanis are a sports-loving nation. Through sport, individuals of different backgrounds—cultures, religions, and languages—can unite on one platform to build bridges of understanding.

He was joined by Ronak Lakhani, Chairperson of Special Olympics Pakistan, who underlined Pakistan’s positive global image. “The successful hosting of international events, including the Champions Trophy, shows the world that Pakistan is a safe and welcoming country for sports.
