Excelsior CorrespondentJAMMU, Apr 13: A Pakistan army drone trying to smuggle weapons and narcotics into the Indian territory from the Line of Control (LoC) was recently brought down by the Indian troops using the indigenously designed and developed ‘Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System’.Follow the Daily Excelsior channel on WhatsAppThe drone was trying to carry out surveillance along the LoC in the border areas and was probably carrying arms and explosives to drop them at an identified place. The Chinese origin drone was brought down by Army Air Defence units deployed in the 16 Corps area, located in the border district of Poonch where the troops have thwarted series of infiltration attempts by the terrorists recently.

Drones are often used by the Pakistan army and the terrorists to send arms, ammunition, explosives and narcotics into the Indian territory which are picked up by the Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and later handed over to the terrorists operating in different areas. The incident occurred when the hostile drone was detected operating close to Indian territory along the LoC, the sources said.Sources said that the drone was brought down using the indigenously designed and developed ‘Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System,’ which is capable of jamming, spoofing, and bringing down enemy drones across a variety of ranges and scenarios.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the system has been deployed in significant numbers along India’s borders, they said. They added that it is also equipped with a 2-kilowatt laser beam that can strike down enemy drones from an effective range of 800 to 1,000 meters. The DRDO-developed system is actively used by the India Army and the other security forces for counter drone operations.

Sources said the technology is being tested and will be deployed at different places when it is declared completely successful. This will give a blow to attempts by the Pakistan army and terrorists to use drones to send weapons and narcotics into Jammu and Kashmir. There have been several attempts, some of them successful, to send narcotics and weapons via drones in neighbouring Punjab also.

Previously, security forces intercepted consignments of weapons which were sent by Pakistan via drones on the International Border in Jammu. However, later it was discovered that some consignments sent through drones had reached safely into the hands of terrorists. However, during past quite some time, the use of drones has been effectively curbed by the security forces.
