When it comes to food, the South is rooted in a deep sense of tradition. It's a must to try southern staples like fried green tomatoes, okra, shrimp and grits, beignets, and chicken and waffles, whether you're an area native or just passing through. Southerners also value family, so it's no surprise that the Page family worked together to combine the two and open Page's Okra Grill.
This restaurant offers traditional southern foods with their flair. It's where the owners say, "Food is life." The restaurant began in 2006 when Ashleigh Page worked for another local eatery.
Al Roker stopped there, and Ashleigh cooked Southern soul food for him. Afterward, Ashleigh's dad suggested she and the family open their own restaurant. Two years later, the doors of the first family-owned Page's Okra Grill opened in Mount Pleasant.
Its name pays homage to the family and the Gullah word for “gumbo. The restaurant took off, and today, there is a second location in Summerville and a Page's Okra Grill Food Truck in Moncks Corner. As stated on its website, “Our family is from Mt.
Pleasant. We believe in sipping sweet tea on a porch swing during the summertime, juicy fried chicken, Sunday brunch and made-from-scratch biscuits. We pride ourselves on our Southern hospitality and community and are always making new friends.
” Signature dishes include redneck rolls, which are wood-smoked BBQ pork and homemade pimento cheese rolled into a spring roll wrapper and lightly fried. The beignets are traditionally dusted with powdered sugar but served with a tangy key lime custard. They have given chicken and waffles a special twist by creating a mouth-watering cinnamon bun waffle topped with cinnamon, powdered sugar, candied pecans and crème anglaise.
It's served with seasonal berries and apple-wood-smoked bacon. Over the years, Page's Okra Grill has received many accolades, including the Best Overall Restaurant in Charleston for the Post and Courier and Best Shrimp and Grits in Mount Pleasant Magazine and Moultrie News. They have even been featured on the Travel Channel, spotlighting their house specialty, shrimp and grits.
Page's Okra Grill also prides itself on supporting local businesses through partnerships with local farms and seafood suppliers and its bar program, which also features local spirits and craft breweries. Speaking of drinks, say cheers with its award-winning Bloody Mary, voted the best in Charleston. When the weather is nice, enjoy the drink on their patio (and bring your furbaby along!) Thanksgiving and the end-of-year holidays are quickly approaching, and Page's Okra Grill offers catering services.
You can order in advance and pick up your order or utilize their mobile kitchen for on-site events. The last day for pickup is Wednesday, Nov. 27 (the day before Thanksgiving).
