Paban Kumar Sarma, a noted advocate, social worker of Tezpur, died on March 22, 2025, at Gauhati Medical College due to cardiac failure. Late Sarma was born at Dadhora, Bamunchuburi, Tezpur and had his school and college education at Tezpur. After graduation, he joined Tezpur Law College and obtained LLB Degree and enrolled himself as a member of Bar Council of Assam, , Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.
In the year 1985, he joined Tezpur Bar and established himself as an advocate of repute. He was equally competent in all the branches of Law. Being an active member of the Bar, he was always vocal for the welfare of the lawyers.
Late Sarma was associated with the Legal Aid Forum and extended possible legal aid to the poor and downtrodden. He was actively associated with sports and inspired young lawyers to regularly practice sports for their good health. He was concerned for the insecure life of the lawyers at the last stage of their practice and always urged upon the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh to initiate schemes for medical help, pension, and group insurance coverage.
However his dream remains unfulfilled. Late Sarma was also actively associated with the new building complex of Tezpur Bar Association which is 100 years old. Though the ground floor of the new complex is ready to be inaugurated, his sudden death pains every bar member before the inauguration which is scheduled on April 4.
Late Sarma was very cordial with young lawyers, specially the new entrants and encouraged them for hard work and studies to shine in the legal profession. Late Sarma was a man of strict principle, discipline, and a helpful person. He never hesitated to extend help to whoever approached him.
His sudden death is a huge loss amongst the legal fraternity of , which is not easy to fill up. Late Sarma was a man of outspoken character and never hesitated to fight for the right cause. Tezpur Bar has condoled his death in a condolence meeting of the Bench and the Bar recalled his contributions.
He was closely connected with many socio-cultural organizations of Tezpur and Dadhora. He was 65 and survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. On the occasion of Adya Shraddha, I pay my last homage to the departed soul.
