The holiday season is inching closer.

The holiday season is inching closer. Fall officially begins this weekend, even though the temperatures here in Texas might not reflect it. Football and seasonal festivities occupy most weekends over the next couple of months.

We also have the Comal County Fair and Rodeo happening at the end of this month, and then Halloween events followed by Wurstfest, which is then succeeded by Thanksgiving and Christmas happenings. It’s a lot — and in order to stay energized, we eat. We eat a lot.

Right in the middle of the holiday craze is the food. Aromas from soups cooking in the crockpot and cookies baking in the oven fill the house throughout the season. Perhaps someone’s got a roast going or wings in the fryer, or maybe there’s a pie cooling off near the kitchen window.

There’s a lot of home cooking going on. While there are many who are fortunate to have plenty to go around, we also need to remember those who struggle most this time of year to put food on the table. During last week’s Comal County Commissioners Court meeting, September was proclaimed Hunger Action Month in Comal County.

A staggering statistic was reported during the meeting that the New Braunfels Food Bank and its partners assisted on average 3,402 households and 8,664 individuals last year in New Braunfels alone and assisted many other struggling households in Comal County. In the state, nearly 5 million people struggle with hunger, and of them, 1.6 million are children.

As we continue to see more and more people moving to our community, that number has potential to increase over the upcoming years. We cannot let our neighbors go hungry, and donating to your local food bank regularly is a great way to help the cause. You can donate food.

While you’re out at the grocery store shopping, pick up an extra can of green beans or tomatoes, grab another box of oatmeal or cereal, and take it to your local food bank. You can donate peanut butter, canned soup, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned stew, canned fish, canned beans, pasta, rice or any other non perishable food item. You can donate time.

Volunteers are essential in the effort to end hunger. People are needed to sort and pack food donations, distribute food, harvest and prepare meals in the community kitchen. You can donate money.

According to the New Braunfels Food Bank website, every dollar donated equals seven meals for families and individuals in need. You can make donations online via nbfoodbank.org/ham/donate or by calling 830-327-6000.

You can make donations by mail or in-person. The New Braunfels Food Bank is located at 1620 S. Seguin Ave.
