Memorial Day weekend is known as the unofficial start of tourism season in New Braunfels, but we’re in for a head start this coming weekend thanks to the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in San Antonio. The Alamodome is once again hosting the event, which will draw countless fans from the four participating schools — Florida, Auburn, Duke and Houston. Expect those U of H fans to get here a little earlier since it’s just a short drive down I-10.
Those that get to the San Antonio area with time to spare will no doubt be looking for things to do, which should bring a healthy heap of humanity northeast to New Braunfels. Some will take a trip down one of our rivers or partake in some delicious food and beverages. Many will spend time perusing shops and boutiques owned by locals and also occupy area hotels or vacation rentals.
And while the economy will be grateful for the boost, residents will need to use caution — and perhaps patience — as out-of-towners get acquainted with our road patterns and town layout. As we get closer to the weekend, expect to see more cars in and around the downtown area, as well as the Gruene Historic District. There will, of course, be delays at certain times along I-35, and Buc-ee’s will probably be even more crowded than usual — if that’s even possible.
The first games of the Final Four are set for Saturday, with the winners of each advancing to Monday night’s national championship. Be prepared to see plenty of Cougars, Blue Devils, Gators and Tigers until then. Let’s be good hosts and community ambassadors.
It’ll be a good dry run for the summer season, which is on the way soon. And maybe some of the folks who came for the Final Four will even decide to return to visit Schlitterbahn or take part in Wurstfest..
