The Academy Awards will finally offer an award for stunts, announcing a new category to be given out starting in 2027. As Deadline notes , the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced that an annual competitive Oscar for Achievement in Stunt Design will be awarded starting with the 100th Academy Awards for films released in 2027. The award caps off an effort for decades to get stuntwork recognized at the Oscars.
Category rules for eligibility and voting will be announced in 2027 with the full rules for the 100th Academy Awards Rules. “Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Janet Yang said in a statement announcing the news. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.
” The Oscars previously added a new category for Achievement in Casting in 2024, which will first be awarded at the 98th Academy Awards next January..
