Like all houseplants , orchids require sunlight, watering and fertiliser to grow to their fullest potential. Another factor also comes into play when encouraging orchids to bloom for months at a time. According to the plant experts at Bloom and Wild, an orchid's flowers "can last for up to 12 weeks".
The plant is notoriously hard to keep alive, but with the plant expert's top tips, you can ensure the orchid and its flowers thrive. One crucial task many plant owners may not do when it comes to caring for an orchid is regularly misting the plant with water. The experts elaborated: "Humidity is vital as it helps to recreate the natural habitat of the orchid.
" Another way to increase humidity around the plants is to place the orchid pot on a tray of pebbles filled with water. With increased humidity in mind, it's worth talking about the plant's watering needs. "Because orchids are a tropical plant they don’t need watering a lot," the experts insisted.
"In fact, overwatering is one of the main killers of this pretty plant, so be careful." Orchids typically require watering around once per week, but the watering schedule changes if you're using fertiliser. For the week the orchid is fed fertiliser, it's best not to water the plant within that seven-day window.
As for sunshine needs, be mindful that an orchid can suffer from sunburn if left out in direct sunlight for too long. "Indirect sunlight is best for this plant," the experts noted. "So, placing it on a windowsill where it gets a lot of natural light and has a consistent temperature is perfect.
" Regular misting of water Weekly watering, unless given fertiliser Indirect sunlight Given fertiliser during spring and summer.
