By Leauanae Zeprina Siitia Fale, Auckland New Zealand. A Remarkable Show of Unity in Samoa’s Political Landscape Samoa’s current political situation is nothing short of extraordinary. At a time when division and political self-interest often take precedence over national unity, Samoa’s leaders have demonstrated a rare and commendable commitment to prioritizing the well-being of their people above personal and political ambitions.

The governing FAST party, despite its internal factions—one leading with 15 members and the other holding 19—has chosen to work together rather than succumb to division. The opposition HRPP, with 18 members, has also taken a pragmatic and selfless stance by declaring support for the government and rejecting a snap election. This is a clear and unprecedented moment where leaders have placed Samoa’s stability above political calculations, ensuring that governance continues smoothly until next year’s election.

Leadership in Action Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata‘afa has shown unwavering courage in leading through a period of intense political pressure. Her steadfast leadership in maintaining stability is commendable. Likewise, Laauli Leuatea Schmidt has displayed restraint and deep love for Samoa by ensuring that political differences do not destabilize the country.

Former Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, once a staunch rival, has also played a crucial role in securing national peace by offering support to the government. At a time when many other nations are struggling with political deadlocks, Samoa is setting a new standard for unity in governance. Leaders have set aside their differences and reaffirmed their commitment to serving the people rather than allowing political maneuvering to dictate the country’s direction.

This is the kind of leadership the world needs more of—leaders who put their country before party politics. Walking the Talk Samoan leaders now have the opportunity to prove that their words of love and service to Samoa are more than just rhetoric. If they truly believe that a snap election is neither economically viable nor in the best interest of the country, then they must continue to work together constructively within Parliament.

The discussions on majorities and minorities must stop, as they only serve to contradict the message of unity and shared purpose. Now is the time for action, for real cooperation, for proving that leadership is about service, not self-interest. A Model for the World Samoa is showcasing to the world what true leadership looks like—one rooted in cultural values of *faaaloalo* (respect), *alofa* (love), *tofa fetalai* (wisdom in speech), and *ava fatafata* (dignity).

These values, deeply embedded in the Samoan way of life, are further strengthened by Christian principles of love, kindness, and forgiveness. At this moment, Samoa’s leaders are not just governing—they are demonstrating a God-fearing leadership that prioritizes service over self-interest. The world should take note.

In an era where political division and instability are rampant, Samoa stands as a beacon of unity, proving that when leaders choose collaboration over conflict, nations thrive.
