One of OpenAI’s accounts on X on Monday reported a security breach, allegedly linked to cryptocurrency scams . A post appeared on the ChatGPT maker's 'Newsmaker' account, advertising an OpenAI-themed crypto token called $OPENAI, directing users to a fake website. The cryptic post persuaded users that they could claim a share of its initial supply and gain uninterrupted access to upcoming beta programs.
It featured a 'CLAIM $OPENAI' button that lured users to connect their cryptocurrency wallets, likely to harvest sensitive login information. “We’re very happy to announce $OPEANAI: the token bridging the gap between Al and blockchain technology,” the post said. “All OpenAI users are eligible to claim a piece of $OPENAI’s initial supply.
Holding $OPENAI will grant access to all of our future beta programs.” There is no official statement from OpenAI or X yet. This came soon after the hacking of the Supreme Court's YouTube channel, which promoted a cryptocurrency by Ripple Labs.
A similar incident was reported in June last year where the X account of OpenAI’s chief technology officer got hacked to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme. Crypto scams on high-profile X accounts have been increasing, with Americans losing $5.6 billion to such schemes in 2023, a 45% rise from 2022.
