OpenAI is reportedly working on creating its own smartphone. Reports suggest the company is working on a screenless phone concept and other AI-driven devices. A smartphone-like product that’s more intuitive, ambient, and “less socially disruptive than the iPhone.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is probably the biggest AI giant right now and now it is planning to enter the smartphone space. If reports are to be believed, OpenAI is currently working on creating its own smartphone. A report by The Information revealed that the AI giant is exploring a strategic partnership with io Products, a company co-founded by former Apple design legend Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

When io Products was asked about this, the company denied the claims that it’s developing an AI-powered smartphone. However, other reports suggest the company is working on a screenless phone concept and other AI-driven devices. Backed by investors like Laurene Powell Jobs, the startup is said to be raising funds close to $1 billion, indicating something big is on the horizon.

While it is yet to be confirmed, this collaboration could be the start of a new chapter in the mobile tech world. Altman had previously also expressed interest in building a device that reimagines human-computer interaction. A device that is less reliant on screens and more integrated with natural language processing.

Sources also claim that the company’s goal is to build a smartphone-like product that’s more intuitive, ambient, and “less socially disruptive than the iPhone.” With GPT-4o’s recent success, including a million new users, OpenAI clearly sees hardware as its next big leap. If OpenAI was indeed working on a smartphone powered by AI, it could rival the iPhone in the same way Apple revolutionised phones back in 2007.

Some have gone ahead and called it the “iPhone of Intelligence.” As Apple battles delays in its Apple Intelligence rollout, rising tariffs, and iPhone 17 pricing concerns, OpenAI may have found the perfect moment to make its move. It will be interesting to see a smartphone that is based on ChatGPT and more.
