OpenAI is reinforcing its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) ambitions with a $40 billion funding round, aimed at accelerating the development of next-generation AI models and expanding its computing infrastructure. The investment, led by a consortium of major backers, solidifies OpenAI’s position at the forefront of AGI research, fueling advancements in machine learning, computational efficiency, and real-world AI applications. “We’re announcing new funding—$40 billion at a $300 billion post-money valuation, which enables us to push the frontiers of AI research even further, scale our compute infrastructure, and deliver increasingly powerful tools for the 500 million people who use ChatGPT every week,” OpenAI said in a statement.

Their support will help us continue building AI systems that drive scientific discovery, enable personalised education, enhance human creativity, and pave the way toward AGI that benefits all of humanity,” the AI company added.

Other participants in the funding round include Microsoft, Coatue, Altimeter, and Thrive, all of whom were early backers of OpenAI. A significant portion of the new funding, approximately $18 billion, will be allocated to OpenAI’s ambitious Stargate project, which aims to establish a network of AI data centres across the United States, according to a report by CNBC. However, despite the substantial funding commitment, Stargate’s development plan remains incomplete.

The Financial Times reported that the project lacks a fully developed roadmap and has yet to secure additional funding required for its execution. Backed by OpenAI, SoftBank, the Middle East AI fund MGX, and other investors, Stargate is expected to channel between $100 billion and $500 billion into AI data centre infrastructure.
