share 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 The clash of the social media giants is set to escalate, as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman looks to further its rivalry with Elon Musk. According to The Verge , the artificial intelligence (AI) research organisation is working on an X-like social network , with development still in the early stages. For now, the project has taken the form of an internal prototype focusing on ChatGPT’s image generation that features a social feed.
There’s no word on whether it will eventually be released as a separate app or integrated into ChatGPT, which became the most downloaded app globally last month, but it’s certain to put OpenAI in direct competition with Meta and in particular, X/Twitter. The feud between Altman and Musk intensified when the latter put out an offer to purchase OpenAI for US$97.4 billion, to which Altman responded, “no thank you but we will buy twitter for US$9.
74 billion if you want.” In a separate post, Altman stoked the fire by writing, “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app” when reports of Meta working on its equivalent of ChatGPT surfaced. It’s unclear whether the early-stage social network will even be out in the wild, but ideas are floating around internally on how to make it work best.
“The Grok integration with X has made everyone jealous,” said an AI industry professional to The Verge. “Especially how people create viral tweets by getting it to say something stupid.” This virality-focused approach, termed “bait” in social media lexicon, has been exacerbated by Musk’s takeover and flagrant disregard for discriminatory and ill comments.
The 53-year-old and Altman are both embroiled in a jury trial set to begin in spring next year, with the former suing the ChatGPT maker for abandoning its original goal of benefitting humanity for corporate gain. In response, OpenAI counter-sued Musk for harassment and adopting a shift to a for-profit model.
